About Us

The Watercolour Society of Queensland (WSQ) is an incorporated Association that is more than 30 years old. WSQ commenced at an inaugural meeting organised by two Sunshine Coast women, Janet O’Kines and Lois Beumer, held on 5 June 1986 at the Royal Queensland Art Society (RQAS) headquarters in Brisbane.

Today, WSQ operates from shared premises known as the Hub, that are part of the Brisbane Visual Arts Community (BVAC) located at 140 Weller Rd Tarragindi QLD 4121. Office Hours are 10am to 2pm on the first, third and when applicable the fifth Thursday of each month.

WSQ is managed by volunteers and exists to encourage participation in watercolour painting at all levels, including provision of tuition and training, exhibitions and social events. We conduct activities on weekends and weekdays to cater for the various interests and time-availability of our members, whether in full-time work, retired or still studying.

EKKA Field and Fashion Show success!!!!

Great news for WSQ and one of our members Iryna Bendasova. It is a great pleasure to share Iryna's completed watercolour painting with you all. Iryna won a commission from the RNA to complete a watercolour portrait painting for the EKKA Field and Fashion Show in August 2018. Her painting will be donated for a Charity Raffle to be held during EKKA week.

As part of the WSQ "young artist" initiative, opportunities are being discussed with Lindsay MacMahon from Jasco (Winsor and Newton) to support such initiatives with the nomination of one young artist every year to receive support via product.

Iryna Bendasova, being the first recipient of such support, is pictured here with  Winsor and Newton representative Lindsay MacMahon (of Jasco) looking over the donated Winsor and Newton art products.

WSQ is proud to be part of RNA EKKA & Fine Arts and acknowledges their support along with the support of Lindsay MacMahon of Jasco with this initiative. These opportunities just cannot happen without the support of our sponsors and industry friends. Many thanks!

Keep an eye out for Iryna's work. Its amazing. Wait till you see it!

2018 ANNUAL WATERCOLOUR EXHIBITION is coming!!!!
Get ready for a show of your watercolour art!!

Can you believe it there are only 8 weeks for Members of the Watercolour Society of Qld to get ready for the 2018 Annual Watercolour Exhibition. It starts on Friday 31st August, and runs through to Sunday 2nd September 2018.

Preparing for an art exhibition is no easy task.  There are so many things to think about and you want to make sure your work is ready to be taken home by their buyer.  Here are a couple of simple tips.   Once you have finished your work, take a good look at it.  Select you most impressive work.  Does it need to be framed?  If so, what type of frame should you use?  Are your paintings  signed? Are they ready for hanging?  Wrap your work ready for transportation so it doesn't get damaged,  create labels for your artwork, conform to the Conditions of Entry.

Conditions of Entry will be available shortly and will be sent to all members and will soon also be accessible on the WSQ website.

History of the Watercolour Society of Queensland

The Watercolour Society of Queensland is 32 years old this year and in celebration of our History, the Society had a special treat for all of our Visitors at The Auditorium, Mt Coot-tha Brisbane Botanical Gardens on the 7th and 8th April 2018 at the Autumn Watercolour Exhibition.

The static display of Watercolour Paintings covered the first 20 years of our inauguration. The paintings have been kindly donated by previous Tutors. We think they are fabulous and we're very proud to show them.   Our exhibition patrons who looked at the display enjoyed and appreciated the art and in some cases a few of our members could remember going to the particular demonstration of the art on display.

Chris Osborn who is cataloguing and collecting our history put this display together. Great work Chris!
Keep an eye out for future instalments from Chris of the Society's history as additional pieces are collected, collated and brought to life once again for all to enjoy!
Further images and discussions around how the Autumn Exhibition was received can be found on the Watercolour Society of Queensland Facebook page.
